Dear sPHENIX,

Here is the SCM minutes on August 14.

*****************************

General (Stefan/Kin)

  • RHIC will soon no longer be a Controlled Area

  • But will stay in Restricted Access for now

Current Priority Items (PC)

  • Take two weeks to look for tracks from cosmics in TPC, MVTX, INTT, TPOT (until end of August) before considering opening up the detector

  • Get TPC to work (again)

  • MVTX firmware/software development for fast reset of read-out

  • DAQ development to get to high speed

  • Exercise all detectors and read-out by taking cosmics data

Work Control Coordinators (Chris/Joel)

  • Lee and Kevin worked on the TPC gas system today and got better readouts for the barometric pressure and gas temperature sensors.

  • Water leak detection installation is completed. Configuration and programming are in progress.

  • AC techs are scheduled to work in the Rack Room Portable AC unit.

Plan of the Day (Stefan/PC/all–to be revisited at end of meeting)

  • Work on the searching for TPC signal pulse

  • Streaming readout test of INTT (Local -> Global)

  • Taking cosmics with HCal coincidence trigger for tracking detectors, HCal, ZDC (since it includes sEPD), but not MBD (since Mickey would like to take laser runs every day)

========================================================================

Evening (Virginia)

  • Took cosmics with HCal + tracking detectors (TPC HV off after experts left)

  • INTT LAD2 and cooling interlock alarms- Rob Pisani reset and Rachid had us turn INTT back on

  • Joey swapped fibers from seb06 and seb07 back to original positions in anticipation of EMCal pedestal run in the morning

  • INTT LAD1 alarm twice within a few minutes; recovered on its own

  • One crash of seb16 rcdaq server during data taking; recovered by rerunning rcdaq setup

Night (Silas)

  • TPC had 1 channel of low voltage with 0 current

  • INTT LAD2 chiller tripped twice, once setting off the interlock, LAD1 tripped once

  • Magnet ramped off from 5-6:30, all detectors put into mode requested in standing orders

  • Took emcal pedestal data with magnet on and off--seb01&07 got no events, 06 did ok, tended to drop out between 50k-90k events

Day (Christine)

  • MVTX circuit breaker bumped around 9:25.  MVTX turned off.  Therefore took it out of the run until recovery.

  • INTT chiller out 11:10

  • Lots of taking detectors in and out to let experts work

========================================================================

Magnet (Kin)

  • After communicating with the Shift Leader that all sPHENIX sub-detectors were ready, I started to ramp down the magnet at 5:08 am and the Magnet current dropped to 0 A around 6:35 am.

  • The Cryo started the process of offloading the helium only after their 8:15 meeting (> 9 am).  The Magnet temperature started to drift up for about 10 days, during which the Cryo Group will install some jumpers (welding at 10 o’clock and 8 o’clock) so that the Magnet can be kept around 80K before the next RHIC run (2024).  [ Depending on which temperature sensor, the Magnet is now at ~15K though the drift slows down gradually. ]

  • Magnet Power Supply (1008B) has been LOTO-ed off.

MBD (Mickey)

  • Change HV to field off setting

Trigger (Dan)

GTM/GL1 (Martin/Dan/John K)

  • Version 49 that fixes the 45% dead time issue. With the “upgrade” of FAs to L1 triggers, we got hit with unused fiber inputs being seen as spewing a large rate of triggers. Not used, still considered in the busy calculation. Fixed.

DAQ (Martin/John H)

  • Didn’t get around to the announced update of jseb2server yet… gonna be a long day.. Also some new tools to deploy that I’d like to get feedback from the shift crews about

MVTX (Cameron)

  • MVTX was turned off during magnet ramp down

  • Rack 2E3 was accidentally tripped

  • It was our 24V so all interlocks fired and took the MVTX offline

  • New reset trip script from Michael was tested successfully. This script can only be executed by MVTX experts as it is located within our control framework that we haven’t released yet

Zhaozhong and Hao-Ren are trained to operate the MVTX and know how to solve common issues seen by the shift crew

Is there a plan to open the pole-tip doors?

TPC (Tom Hemmick, JIn, Takao, Evgeny, Charles, David, Bob, Ross, Nick, Luke, John K.)

  • Today 08/14:

  • Sal came by to help us fix problems in Slots 1-12 in 3A3-2 (went off last Friday)

  • Sal tracked issue down to a loose plug in MP 3 in 3A3 rack

  • He powered down rack, then plugged in, then re-powered

  • All FEEs came back after he did this

  • Bob Azmoun + Nick + Luke making good progress on R2 test module in lab

Tomorrow 08/15:

  • 10 AM meeting with Bob Azmoun & Frank Toldo for planning the “tee-in” of the test R2 module with TPC return gas line.

Future:

  • Pass on David’s spark monitor running expertise to rest of TPC group

  • Using the test module to look at TPC gas

  • Continue to debug TPC, searching for other potential causes of disappearance of signals

HCal (Silas)

  • Raw Trigger rate is up by about 20% on coincidence after magnet turned off, no change on base trigger, as expected

EMCal (Sean)

  • Took pedestal runs before/after shutting off magnet (thank you Silas and Jaebeom)

TPOT (Hugo)

INTT (Genki)

  • INTT took cosmic ray data well.

  • Now we are testing the streaming readout.

sEPD(Rosi)

  • North electronics install Wednesday - will touch base with Chris P. et al tomorrow
