Dear Kin

Can you please add John Haggerty, Jin Huang, and Luke Legnosky to the list?  The list does not force anyone to come in, but these guys are all highly helpful in our plans tomorrow.

Thanks,
Tom

Hello,

Below is BNL's email about the weather.    I can't predict the possibility of BNL delayed opening normally tomorrow.   The probability is non-zero.

But just in case, I've designated Tom Hemmick, Evgeny Shulga and Charles Hughes as "Essential Employees" so that they may be allowed to enter BNL

even if they delay the normal opening.   I can add other people if necessary.   ( Please let me know if you want to or don't want to. )

I've planned to make this kind of designation for our sPHENIX shifters if a snow storm comes in the next couple of months.   I can un-designate afterwards.

Everybody with a BNL domain account can check their status of "Essential" or "Emergency" at "essential.bnl.gov" .

Kin

Accumulating Snow Expected Tuesday, 2/13, Check Lab Status and Watch for Slippery Conditions on Site

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Suffolk County from 4 a.m. through 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13. Rain this evening is expected to change to snow overnight and may be heavy at times Tuesday. Accumulations of 6-10 inches are expected at this time, with gusty winds up to 40 mph.

Staff should check the Lab's operating status Tuesday morning before travelling to the site. Any changes to the Lab's operating status will be announced through www.bnl.gov, employee email, (631) 344-INFO (4636), and the Everbridge mass notification system before 6 a.m. Tuesday. Information is also provided to the following radio stations: WLNG-FM (92.1), WALK-FM (97.5), WBAB-FM (102.3), WBZO-FM (103.1), WBLI-FM (106.1), and WRIV-AM (1390).

Expect slippery conditions on site and on Suffolk County roads. Wear proper footwear, watch for slippery areas, drive carefully, remove snow accumulation from your vehicle before driving, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid potential hazards when walking and driving. Use extra caution when exiting your vehicle as parking lots may be slippery.

CLEARING SNOW / PARKING LAB VEHICLES: The Site Resources Division will clear and sand roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, and building entries. All employees who are responsible for Lab vehicles are asked to park and cluster them in corners of parking lots to allow more effective snow removal. Please avoid parking these vehicles by building entrances, since this makes snow removal difficult.

EXPERIMENTS: Since power outages are possible, researchers should work with their management to determine appropriate procedures to ensure experiments are in a safe status in the event of a loss of power.

WORKING FROM HOME: As a reminder, exempt employees can charge time for work performed off site during a site closure. Any exempt employees planning to do so should speak with their supervisor to ensure they have the materials and means necessary to complete their work off site. Under the Lab's flexible work hours policy, exempt staff can also make up hours within the current time reporting period to account for site closures.

If the Lab remains open during a storm, employees should exercise discretion in driving to work based on their personal judgment and local conditions. Employees can speak with their supervisor about working from home during a storm or using vacation time, if necessary.

Ice melt is available in buckets at building entrances and may be used by anyone. If an unsafe condition has potential to cause an immediate danger to anyone on site, call Ext. 2222. From a cell phone, dial 631-344-2222. If you see something unsafe relating to your facility or building that is not an emergency, contact the Facility Operations Center at Ext. 2468.

Information about the Laboratory's processes for closing and reopening the site can be found here: https://www.bnl.gov/newsroom/news.php?a=221650 (VPN may be required).
