BROOKHAVEN LAB SITE TO CLOSE AT 6 A.M. TODAY, TUESDAY, 2/13
The Brookhaven Lab site will close to all but essential personnel at 6 a.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 13, as a result of the ongoing snowstorm. Essential personnel should continue to report for their scheduled shifts or as instructed by supervisors. If you don't know whether you are essential personnel, ask your supervisor. Non-essential personnel must remain off site until at least 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14. On-site residents/guests must be on the essential list in order to work on site during this closure.
The Lab site is planning to reopen at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Any changes to the Lab's operating status for Wednesday will be provided to staff by 6 a.m. Wednesday.
BE CAREFUL: Walking and driving surfaces may be slippery, so please exercise caution—wear proper footwear, watch for icy areas, drive carefully, remove snow accumulation from your vehicle before driving, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid potential hazards when walking and driving.
WORKING REMOTELY: Staff who have a remote work agreement in place should continue to work and record their hours normally during the site closure. Please work with your supervisor to choose one of the following three options:
- Staff with a remote work agreement in place can charge time for work performed off site (home or elsewhere) as usual to the benefitting project/activity number, recording the hours worked on their timecard.
- Staff with a remote work agreement in place can use the flexible work hours option, with their supervisor's approval, by using other hours worked and recorded in the time-reporting period to offset the site closure period and meet their target hours.
- If the above two options do not offset the closed period and result in staff not meeting their target hours, staff can use vacation time to achieve their target hours for the period. Charges to vacation time are subject to supervisory approval.
For more details on flexible schedules, refer to the Flexible Work Arrangements Subject Area in SBMS (https://sbms.bnl.gov/sbmsearch/subjarea/198/198_SA.cfm?).
Non-essential staff who can only complete their work on site should record the Excused ("E") code on their timecard for their normal work hours during the site closure. All other employees should follow the instructions of their supervisors and managers.
FURTHER CHANGES TO LAB STATUS: Changes to the Lab's operating status are announced through www.bnl.gov, employee e-mail, (631) 344-INFO (4636), and the Everbridge mass notification system. Information is also provided to the following radio stations: WLNG-FM (92.1), WALK-FM (97.5), WBAB-FM (102.3), WBZO-FM (103.1), WBLI-FM (106.1), and WRIV-AM (1390).
CLEARING SNOW / PARKING LAB VEHICLES: The Production Division will clear and sand roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, and building entries.
EXPERIMENTS: Since power outages are possible, researchers should work with their management to determine appropriate procedures to ensure experiments are in a safe status in the event of a loss of power.
Employees should exercise discretion in driving to work based on their personal judgment and local conditions. Employees can speak with their supervisor about working from home during a storm or using vacation time, if necessary.
RETURNING TO THE SITE: Please be advised that while primary parking lots and walkways will be cleared when the Lab reopens, work will likely continue to clean secondary locations. Ice melt is available in buckets at building entrances and may be used by anyone. If an unsafe condition has potential to cause an immediate danger to anyone on site, call Ext. 2222. From a cell phone, dial 631-344-2222. If you see something unsafe relating to your facility or building that is not an emergency, contact the Facility Operations Center at Ext. 2468.
