Subject: Five Minute Safety - Removing Items from Radioactive Material Areas - Rule Clarification

Good Morning Everyone,

Last week a member of our team removed an item from an area posted “Radioactive Material Area” and transported it to Building 923 where the RCT’s offices are for a required Activation Check.  The item was not activated.

This is never allowed.  Items may not be removed from a Radioactive Material Area prior to an activation check from the RadCon Technicians.  Doing so may inadvertently cause the loss of control of unlabeled radioactive material, possibly resulting in exposure of personnel and/or the public to ionizing radiation.

The only times it is permissible to remove items from a Radioactive Material Area without an activation check is:

1.      An item that you brought into the area and maintained under your purview for the duration of the work where there is no possibility of activation or contamination.  (If you left it in an accelerator enclosure and the beam was turned on – you did not maintain control and an activation check is always required).

2.      The background radiation is too high to accurately perform the activation check.  Only the RCTs can make this determination.  An activation check is then required to be performed by a qualified RCT prior to release for unrestricted use.

Many of our posted areas are Radioactive Material Areas,  Controlled Areas or a Radiation Areas because of the prevailing local radiological conditions and potential of activation by the beam.  Always be aware of the radiological postings in the area where you are performing work. Read the entire posting before entering the area and proceeding with work activities.

The RCTs can be contacted for an activation check at x4660.  If you have a question or concern please call the FS Rep at X5992 or 631-905-7534.
