Announcement:
A pre-CDR document is planned for the coming BNL Cost and Schedule review. More detail will be discussed in the coming Thu sPHENIX meeting. Please call into that meeting for the pre-CDR information.
Following the call for pre-CDR, we are also planning for simulation code freeze (soon-ish?) -> simulation production (Aug?) -> analysis tool freeze (early Sept?) -> producing plots (Sept?). Details are still being determined. We plan to have a discussion on this plan in the next simulation meeting too.
Dave, Martin - sPHENIX computing distribution via VM
Dave/Page 4: Concept introduction John Lajoie: modern VM are very efficient (with cost of few %) Dave: may depending on operation, which leads to optimization of the sPHENIX VM system design Abhisek: similar experience on ORNL super computer supports such direction too. Chris: RCF is also looking into the use of Docker Engine too
Dave/Page 5: File system considerations. Martin: frequency of update will affect the choice. Jin: would we gain control of the CVM-FS write permission (rather than going through FNAL right now for CVM-FS)? Dave: need to be investigated.
Dave/Page 6/7: VM VS Docker John L. : another option would be use a VM disk for distribution.
Dave/Discussion: Tony: how condor (or in general batch) job would run? Dave: we expect a similar way in running it.
Martin/Page 7: VMWare: the cost would be low for academia use (like us)
Martin/demonstration of running sPHENIX over VMWare: Jin: Shall we standardize the update macro? Martin: testing VirtualBox before define a releasing
John L.: we shall explore distributing with virtual disks. Update: a new thread started in the software-l regarding this topic. Martin: to be explored
Chris: the goal would be for people use in laptop quick test. Farm need different strategy.
Jin: Geant4 after-burner to model 3D magnetic field in outer HCal
Achim: a full 3D model calculation on the Hcal field is also produced by Walter Sondheim (LANL), which we can use for cross check. Slides added to the agenda. Action Item [Jin & Achim]: cross check the modeled 3D field map with 3D calculated field from Walter .
Conclusion: minor change in Hcal response observed. No objection raised regarding using the after-burner in HCAL simulation until the full 3D map can be imported.
Eliton - Shower G4 parameter tuning
Page3: Jin: Production threshold control the secondary particle production, rather than the primary one.
Conclusion 1: Current check did not show strong dependence of shower response in SPACAL. Still need to check shower RMS. Action Item [Eliton] : threshold dependency of electron energy resolution
Part2: Conclusion 2: Checked the average step length for muon in large block is ~ a few cm.
Chris - pCDR simulation preparation
Changing forward of PHG4Hit
Jin: Can we just increase ROOT version ID by 1? Chris: did NOT work last time.
Action Item [Chris]: After update the software, redo test production sample we used in SBU workfest. Notify the list Action Item [Alan]: fixing into the irreproducibility issue in vertex finder. Update: Alan committed fix after the meeting already. Chris started the rebuild with this fix.

On Behalf Of Huang, Jin
Dear All,
This is reminder of our weekly sPHENIX simulation meeting Tue Aug 4th 1-3PM. For residents at BNL, we will meet in the 2-187 conference room (for this week and next only).
Continuing the discussions from the last sPHENIX workfest at SBU, we will start this meeting with PHENIX software environment over VM, as well as update to the HCal magnetic field map. More updates are welcomed too.
