Hi folks,

one of the 5 servers needs to have some bad memory chips replaced. This 
will take take about 30-45 minutes. For us this means that during that 
time we can write to it (lustre will just not use this one for storage) 
but if you read a file which is located on that server the process will 
stall until the server is back up. ls will freeze if you hit a file on 
it - so doing an ls in some directory will likely be the last command 
you'll enter in that window until the server is back.

In the past an outage meant that lustre becomes more and more 
unresponsive until pretty much everything freezes up but that typically 
takes many hours. I assume for this short period you will only be 
affected when trying to read/ls a file on that server (and no - there is 
not way for users - including me - to find out where a given file is stored)
