Dear CWR,
 Thanks for posting the improved version. I sign off this version with a 
few minor comments.

General comment:
I am not sure "alternative R observable" is the best choice here. I feel 
a bit uneasy as it sounds like we have now two different variants of the 
R observable. How about saying "modified R observable" everywhere? 
You're being very explicit about what is the modification -- so, it's 
good.

Some more minor comments:
" charge  separation  (∆S)  fluctuations " --> " fluctuations of charge  
separation  (∆S)" or you can just say "charge separation"
"energy" --> "energy of"
You need to add something like "The collection of tracks in" or the 
"list of tracks in" before "Each  event  measured.."
