FYI, some updates on this topic. We got a concrete suggestion from 3M that we need to make sure the water contamination in our NOVEC liquid from the opened drum should be below 90 ppm. I have contacted some people from a chemistry lab at BNL to do a Karl Fischer titration. I've already sent them the safety dataseet and we'll soon collect samples form STAR and proceed with the test.

Best,
Prithwish

Hi Prithwish,

Can you please let me know when you would like to bring the samples over to our lab (building 555, room 389)? How many samples will you be bringing and what volume/mass per sample?

Thanks,
Sasmit

Dear Prithwish

I have asked Sasmit to take over the KF measurement. He is cc’d and can be reached at 4992.

Please circulate the SDS for a quick review. i don’t think any paperwork is required (Nick, please confirm) since Sasmit will run the instrument. It only takes few ml of sample per measurement, but I would let Sasmit to respond how he wants to proceed.

Best

Dear Minfang and Richard,
Since our RHIC run is only a month away I was wondering if we can make some arrangements soon, but definitely as per your convenience. The concrete plan is to do a KF titration of our coolant liquid and prove that the water contamination is below 90 ppm. Otherwise it may be dangerous to use this in the STAR experiment. Can you please let me know what I need to do, like how much sample of the liquid I need to being. Also, if there’s any paper work I need to do to proceed. The liquid C4F9OC2H5 is transparent, not corrosive, nonflammable, a variant of "dry water" that is a family of fluorinated ketone and evaporates very fast.

Best,
Prithwish

Hi Prithwish

It’s probably a simple question to just measure any water impurity in your cooling liquid. We do have KF titrator in my group. Should not be a problem with proper arrangement with Richard.
