Hi Rongrong,
I think it might be a bit hard to answer with the "some of the components are dying" statement, because it depends a bit on what that will look like and whether that is directly related to the length of time it is on during the run.  It's a lot less useful if there are holes - so if a component dies, does that just stay as a hole the entire time or can some of the read-out be moved around during an access to consolidate.  I personally feel it is more useful at mid-rapidity than near the edges of the detector.  If having it off during low lumi will allow it to be there for high lumi, that would give us more integrated luminosity with the BSMD, which would be good.  This would require some specific shift crew instructions - but since there is likely to be a lumi-dependent set of instructions regarding the west EPD, probably these can be linked.

The other thing to perhaps discuss - would it make more sense to keep it off an potentially have it for run 24's pAu?  i don't think we've done gamma jet measurements in pA.  Or save it for run 25, which will have a lot higher luminosity and statistics.  The reality is that there will be many weeks of low lumi running due to sPHENIX.

Cheers,
Rosi

Dear HP PWG

Please see the following question from management about how to best utilize BSMD for Au+Au data taking in 2023 and 2025. Inputs from this group is needed. Thanks.

  1. BSMD: how to run it to maximum its use? Some of the components will be dying once turned on according to Oleg. Therefore, we need to think about how to run it most effectively for physics program. For example, whether we turn it off during low-lumi data taking and only turn it on for high-lumi data. The strong argument to run BSMD is for pi0/gamma separation. The hard probes pwg should discuss this and give an answer for which data sets BSMD is critical to physics.  I have asked Akio to discuss this at the trigger board as well.
