Hi, Han-sheng :

I just committed a fix. See below the shift log entry for the explanation.

"This entry pertains to ZDCSMD. The problem of certain adc values showing double entry or zero has been identified by Chris as  non-unit gains have been used in pxy_tac.dat file.  The non-unit gains were put there for pp collisions for the purpose of online asymmetry analysis, but shouldn't be there for heavy-ion runs.   Aihong created a new file named "pxy_tac.230605.dat" where the gains were set to "1.0". The "pxy_tac.dat" file was then linked to this new file. Aihong proceeded to execute "create_mxq_offset" to update the "mxq_tac.dat" file.

Following this, Aihong requested the shift crew to do the following: 1) reboot TRG+DAQ, 2) take a pedestal run, 3) resume production.

The 1st production run after these steps is 24156035.  I hope this fixes the issue."

Please kindly confirm if you observe the problem in runs starting from 24156035.

Thank you for spotting this issue and for your cooperation in the diagnostic process.

As a side note, it is unlikely that this issue will have a significant impact on the analysis. It may not be noticeable.  Because the distribution of those adc values still exhibits the characteristic shape, that means they are still valid, but just not as accurate as other adc values. In other words, these spike/gaps cause a coarse signal resolution but not wrong information.  Nevertheless, we still need to address and fix it.

Thanks,

Aihong

Thank you for the info. It was very good that Han-Sheng has noticed this,
which is still not very late into the run23. Maybe it would be good to make
sure there are no other similar issues like this on other sub-systems etc...

Hi, ShinIchi :

It is an electronic problem, might be an internal timing issue according to Hank. Let's wait and see if it can be fixed (I hope it can).

Thanks,

Thank you very much for trying to fix this. So it’s unfortunate that the power cycle
does not help. Have you also try to plug in/out the ADC electronics board, if it’s
accessible as it might not be the case that they are all in the beam area. Did I understand
correctly that there is no empty bin next (or close) to the (double entry) spike in the ADC
distribution? If it’s bit error, we would see some empty bins. How do you understand this
fact? Is the total integral sum of the histogram same as the number entry of the histogram?
If that’s the case (bit stack), we are loosing the ADC resolution in some case, where the
detector resolution is anyway much worse than the single ADC channel, so it’s not catastrophic,
though.

Hi, Han-sheng and all:
Just a quick update on this, 1) Hank was able to confirm the problem from his end.  2) The power cycle did not fix this (and we now understand that it cannot).  Chris will look into the electronic board and see what he uncovers.

Hi Aihong,

I am not convenient to attend the meeting today but I have attached the updated slides.

On pages 3 ~6,  It's the plot(east side only) with the run ID 24145032~24149032.
After excluding the runs before 24145032, I can see the issue in some slaters still.
On pages 7~10, It's the plot for a single run ID(24146003).
It is not obvious to spot the issue.

Han-Sheng

Hi, Han-sheng :

I just noticed that your run list includes very early runs. Runs before 24145032 are known to be problematic as they are taken before Chris fixing the QTD timing issue. To rule out it is not because of those runs, could you exclude those runs and remake the plots ?

Thanks,
Aihong

Hi, Han-sheng :

Thanks for the message. So you rely on daily fast offline production to do this ? Note for this purpose, it does not have to be minbias, any collision trigger can serve the purpose.

For a single run, could you post example(s) somewhere ?

If it is convenient for you, could you join today's 10 o'clock meeting and talk about your plots ?

Thanks,
Aihong

Hi Aihong,

I want to correct one thing. the run ID was supposed to be up to 24147033 not 24149034 on my previous slides.

For your first request, due to the lack of minbias zdc trigger rootfiles I probably could not give the update today.
For your second request, I have those plots for a single run but it not obvious to spot the issue with a single run.

Han-Sheng

Hi, Han-sheng :

That is great !  I have asked the shift to power cycle the QTD crate for ZDCSMD. The first meaningful run after the power cycling is 24153074. If you could repeat your study on tonight's data from that run and onwards, what will be helpful. I will bring up this for discussion at tomorrow's 10 o'clock meeting.

Thanks,
Aihong

Hi, Han-sheng :

Thanks for fast response !

It is not exactly stuck bits but I do see generally that when the distribution for lower position bits is smooth, the adc spectrum look normal. This is mostly obvious by looking at east vertical slats.

I will 1) forward your study to star-operation list, 2) ask the shift crew to power recycle the crate for ZDCSMD in a hour or so. I am not sure if it will fix the problem but that is what we can try for now. 3) talk about this at tomorrow's 10'clock meeting.

How soon can you repeat your study if we take runs after power recycling ? The shift QA histogram is not sensitive to this problem because it has 200 bins, not 2000 bins, for adc range from 0 to 2000.

Thanks,
Aihong

Hi, Han-sheng :

Thank you very much for checking this. Since you have the information handy, I hope you don't mind doing a further check. To determine the presence of any stuck bits, would you please convert the ADC readings corresponding to an abnormal channel into a 12-bit binary representation ?  You can then make a histogram to show the distribution of these binary bits. The X-axis should represent the 12-bit positions, and Y-axis should display the frequency (or total counts depending on your prefernce) for each bit being set to 1. In the event of a stuck bit issue, one particular bit will consistently remain either on (1) or off (0), and on the histogram it will have either the maximum possible counts or just zero.

You may also make a similar histogram for a normal channel, just for comparison/reference.

Thanks,
Aihong

Hi, Han-Sheng :

Thanks. I just randomly checked a few from your list, and I don't see this from online plots. For example, see page 29-32 of this file :

To me it looks like a digital rounding issue.  For those bins with double entry, could you check if the adjacent bins got zero entry ?
You have bin width corresponding to one adc count,  what if you double the bin width ?

Thanks,

Aihong

That is interesting. I have not noticed this in shift QA histograms. Could you give me an example runnumber so I can double check it in the JeffPlots ?

Dear ShinIchi,

Yes, our histograms have the number of bin per one adc count and this issue should come from the data itself.
Does Aihong know how to deal with this issue?

Dear Han-Sheng
I would first like to make sure all your histograms have the number of bin per one adc count, right?
If you count which bin number have double event entry counts, you might be able to tell which bit
has problem in the ADC digitization depending on the SMD slat channel. Please talk to the read-out
electronics experts, maybe Aihong as Prithwish says (or maybe talk to Akio?) for ZDC/SMD. They
might just need to power recycle the electronics or plug in/out the ADC board etc…
Best regards, ShinIchi
