Thanks Brett. I had a similar reaction when I googled SWOT.

Sure, reading the slides generate a few impression, if perhaps most are
unkind.  Of course, it is easier for me to criticize than synthesize.

I find it hard to parse the proto "vision", and I accept it is marked
"needs work", but it seems to say the infrastructure is purely for AI.
I am not familiar with the term "autonomous experiments" and google is
not helping me easily change that.  Even with "needs work" qualifier it
is not a good start to have such an apparently ill-defined "vision".

The proposed "AI Policy Working Group" slide does not mention the
existing BNL AI Strategy document.  But then, Google doesn't seem to
find it either.  It makes me wonder if the "policy document" product
to be output by this WG will go similarly ignored in the future.

The "Process" seems reasonable.  Or, at least it is like every other
case of institutional planning where nobody has any actual idea of what
to change but desperately feels the need to make some change.

I'd guess the results of Phase 1 will be end up collecting various petty
gripes from the BNL community about BNL "service providers".  Perhaps
from those complaints something useful can be distilled.

I had to google "SWOT" which reads like utter management slurry and I
strongly pray I'm not asked to provide anything near that line.

I think on the rest of Phase I.2 lines, EDG can provide some thoughtful
input.

Phase II.e should include something about "responsible AI usage".
Though, maybe that falls into II.e.ii.  LS4GAN might be an example of
existing attempts to develop tools for scientifically responsible AI
usage.

Phase III seems to explicitly exclude "Strategy to support large
experiments" which I think is a mistake.

I don't know all names on the BDISC and AI Policy WG, but those I do all
seem reasonable.  For the latter, I will try to kibitz with Torre.

John Hill said the actual charge will come out very soon (within a week).   So
you can wait for the final document.

At the meeting, there were already comments that what’s on the slides is too ASCR
oriented.   Serving the science should be more emphasized.

Hopefully the final charge will reflect that.

                Hong.

Hi Hong,

Can I share it with the NPPS leadership team?

I find it underwhelming and approximately more of the same, ASCR fishing on an expanded scale. It
does not seem to put computing serving our science first.

At today’s science council meeting, John Hill discussed the plan for the

The last attempt a few years ago did not go anywhere, but this time, the lab management wants
to take ownership of this plan.

Please take a look at the “plan for the plan”.

An external advisory committee is foreseen.   It would be good to give our
recommendations who can serve on the committee.
