I reviewed an LDRD proposal earlier this year which may point to what John
Hill is talking about here: it was on using AI - more specifically LLMs - to
control and automate aspects of conducting and controlling experiments at
NSLS-II. Essentially Siri/Google Assistant/Alexa for the experiment control
room. I'll spare you my thoughts on the LDRD itself, but it may be
"experimenting" with such automation of science that John believes should get
some spotlighting. This particular LDRD was approved and garnered some
headlines for the PI in a couple BNL news stories, which I think supports my
guess here.
