Folks,

I’d like to second Eric on this one –

On many of the systems I have worked on in the past, inadequate attention has been paid to the monitoring systems that will be used to track performance variations. This leads to uncertainties and variations that make the system difficult to use and understand and ultimately the detector performance suffers.

If it costs us a little bit more now to have the fiber plugs uniform on all 32 sectors, I’m all for it, and I’ll even wade through the P6 variance report if necessary.

John

Steve-

I don't think the added cost should be a factor if it makes for a more uniform and simpler assembly process. Once we hear back from Uniplast if they are going to provide new modified plugs we can adjust the quote for and order the difusers for the balance of the HCal.

Edward,

I guess the only issue with discarding the existing plugs for Modules1-6 is that the diffusers are glued in, so that’s about $600 lost in diffusers. Aside from that this new design will obviously fix a couple of issues with assembly and save some effort.

Richie,

I suggest to ask Xiaochun to contact Uniplast to get plug modifications immediately approved. I will not be surprised to learn that all plugs are already produced and ready for shipment (UNIPLAST is constrained by completion date  only).

And the question to Steve / Sal - plugs for the first 6 sectors - are you planning to replace those with new ones (no problems doing it - all what we need is to ask for early delivery and delay connecting bundles until that time). For reasons which are already obscured contract asks  for 1000 of those plugs, 400 saltshakers and 275 fiber bundles - plugs shell be plenty for the whole calorimeter.

Hi All,

I’ve made a few changes to the Fiber Plug detail (see attached drawings). I added a step for the fiber ferule to be inserted to the proper distance from the diffuser. I also decreased the diameter of the diffuser counter bore to give Sal an easier time gluing them in place. Comments? Suggestions?
