Hi Barbara,

I'll let Tom comment on the process that let to the reduction in the number of readout planes and the expected change in dE/dx resolution (which may not be as dramatic as the reduction in samples suggests).

For the 2nd point, as was discussed on Friday, we are taking a hard look at the current tracking algorithm - from a efficiency and in particular timing point of view there appears to be significant room for improvement. Whether we look more towards ALICE or STAR for inspiration (we're happy to use the best ideas from both) depends a bit on who else joins the sPHENIX software effort. But right now, If I understand correctly, the first priority of the tracking group is to make sure that our actual tracking geometry (in particular INTT) is optimized properly.

Best,

Gunther

Dear friends,

I'm sorry that I couldn't join the meeting on Friday. I have looked at the tracking slides and have a couple of questions.

1) When was the decision made to decrease the TPC readout planes from 60 to 40? What was the driver for this? I am concerned that this change will cause the possibility of PID with the TPC to go from difficult to impossible. Was this discussed?

2) When thinking about alternative approaches to tracking, how about looking into the software used for STAR? After all, they are already doing tracking with a TPC plus MAPS detectors, with an intermediate silicon layer! I suggest asking our collaborators from STAR to make a presentation about how they do it, and their thoughts about adapting their software for sPHENIX.

best regards,
Barbara
