Hi Paul,
HR asked Hong whether it's a 2 year term and Hong said yes (Jamie also emphasised this). Which is why I made a point of putting in "the preferred candidate will have a career interest in scientific software development" to try to convey we're not looking at it just as a 2 year thing if the person is good. We have a good record of keeping good people whatever the initial hire terms were. In the future I will ask to see the actual posting before it goes out, so we can at least correct things like no contact person given! And massage any term language if we can. Good point that the term langage could deter not only experience but diversity also. Right now there are two candidates, and a third (very good Chris says) who hasn't applied because he can't relocate to BNL (from ORNL) for personal reasons, and we told him that would (obviously) factor into candidate selection. Having seen the other candidates we're now strongly encouraging the ORNL candidate to apply.

Just a comment on the job posting:_______________________________________________
It's nice and reads like you want an experienced person. Great! But then the final sentence says it's a two-year term position. There is no mention of "with possibility of extension subject to blah blah". Maybe there is no long term perspective (really?) but if there is then I think it should be explicitly mentioned in the posting. Asking a first post-doc to relocate for a two year position is maybe fine, asking someone with more experience (and more concerns, maybe a partner, a family)... less obvious, and potentially more of an issue for women than men if we want to consider our approach to diversity.

P.S. I would have ignored this posting based on that statement, others may contact us... except there is no contact name let alone an email address in the job posting.
