Hong used to call a ~monthly meeting with Eric, me and Jamie for SDCC-NPPS communication, Eric would say virtually nothing and they eventually petered out. There is an even more useless SDCC-Physics liaison meeting that is scheduled quarterly as a 30 minute meeting and is usually cancelled. Having Doug chair an SDCC-NPPS leadership meeting periodically is a really interesting idea, could finally be a real communication/coordination channel. And yes, the coffee discussions are very useful.

+1 to Chris’s comments, I think the leadership team’s main job is to represent the experiments which is why the composition is what it is. Kolja’s idea is neat but we shouldn’t feel the need to dodge the question about what the leadership team is primarily for.
I think Doug’s attendance in the NPPS coffees and group meetings has already been useful. I’ve talked to Doug and Eric in the context of DUNE, all very collegial and I would welcome more discussions like that. Why couldn’t we have an SDCC leadership +NPPS leadership team monthly meeting or similar, chaired by Doug, and keep the coffee meetings wide open - there is already plenty of open discussion there?

Something to add to the table would be selectively inviting Doug to some leadership team discussions, or constituting the coordination team, even if it just leadership team + Doug (but that could wind up being more 'political')

But he is part of sdcc and I think we all consider the current direction of sdcc to be a serious problem (a problem where Doug has zero influence to change anything). I do think we need a forum where we can speak frankly about pushing the interest of NP and I don't think you can expect Doug to work against the sdcc management (or better it wouldn't be fair to him for us to expect this).

>>> I'm regularly asked if RACF/SDCC is represented on the NPPS leadership team. When I say no I'm sometimes asked why not. I think ideally there would be good liaison connections in both directions. We have our standing 'SDCC news' slot in the NPPS meeting, and regular attendance from several SDCC people including Tony, but since NPPS was formed the 'natural candidates' for liaison have not been advisable ones in my view. Now perhaps that has changed with the arrival of Doug Benjamin in SDCC. He is certainly a friend of NPPS, attends our meetings and group coffees of his own volition, and sees it as a goal to increase collaboration between SDCC and NPPS. He does have an earned bull-in-the-china-shop reputation, which can be good or bad depending on the circumstances. He's driven by the needs of experiments and users first and foremost.
>>>
>>> In the early days of NPPS planning we included a coordination team, expanding beyond the leadership team to include a wider circle of liaisons, but in practice this has seemed to me superfluous given the good connections to experiments through the leadership team -- except we miss the SDCC liaison that would surely be included in such a body.
>>>
>>> So finally to the point, I'm interested in your view on making Doug a member of the NPPS leadership team. I'm undecided myself as to whether it's a good idea, I will really appreciate your input. At this point all leadership team members represent part of the activities and responsibilities of NPPS. An SDCC rep would be different in nature as a purely liaison role, but it could be useful to the experiments as well as NPPS to have SDCC at the table, emphasising the role of the NPPS leadership team as liaison to the experiments for a spectrum of S&C topics that while focusing on software do touch on computing as well.
