Dear Friends:

I am deeply saddened to learn (first thing this morning here in Japan) of the passing of Satoshi Ozaki. He was an extraordinarily accomplished physicist, and most extraordinary among his many achievements was the constriction and commissioning of RHIC. As PHENIX Spokesperson, I sometimes found myself in conflict with Satoshi over allocation of resources, but I never doubted this was due to his sincere desire for the overall project to succeed. In time I came to appreciate both his deep wisdom in those decisions and and his wonderful sense of humor. As Dave says, he was also a genuinely nice person. We can only hope to honor Satoshi’s work with future efforts at RHIC.

Best regards,

Bill

Dear collaborators,

It saddened me to learn of Satoshi Ozaki's death.  I think everyone
knows that RHIC exists in large part thanks to Satoshi's wisdom and
untiring work as head of the project to design and build it.  That would
be enough for most people, but in fact it's only a small part of what he
accomplished over his career.  In addition, he was a genuinely nice and
funny person and I always enjoyed talking with him.

Regards,
Dave

contributions to nuclear and particle physics and major facilities,
including TRISTAN, RHIC, NSLS-II.  He will be dearly missed.
The family has arranged a service for those who wish to attend at the
Alexander Rothwell (formerly Alexander Tuthill) Funeral Home, 6447 Rt.
