Dear All,

I learnt of Satoshi’s passing this morning when I left Trieste after an EIC meeting.
Bill and Dave have written about Satoshi's enormous contribution to RHIC, Tristan
and NSLS-II. He also played a very important and critical role with T. D. Lee and
Nick Samios in setting up the RIKEN BNL Research Center in the late 1990s.  He
served as the senior advisor to the Center until his last days. In fact met him in
person about two  months ago for one of the RBRC management meetings. He took
pride in the  success of the Center and also its graduates. Right until the end  he
was on top of all little details. In my last conversation with him about two months
ago,  he was super excited  about the possible future of RHIC : the eRHIC. He
was excited about the possibility and talked glowingly about the versatility of
RHIC, the ingenuity of accelerator scientists who made it such a versatile facility,
resulting in an extra ordinary long lived collider facility…. He himself deserves
a lion’s share of RHIC’s success now and in the future...

Indeed, he was a genuinely nice person, who liked talking to people, and
they enjoyed being with him.  — He will be dearly missed.

Sincerely,
Abhay

Dear Friends:

I am deeply saddened to learn (first thing this morning here in Japan) of the passing of Satoshi Ozaki. He was an extraordinarily accomplished physicist, and most extraordinary among his many achievements was the constriction and commissioning of RHIC. As PHENIX Spokesperson, I sometimes found myself in conflict with Satoshi over allocation of resources, but I never doubted this was due to his sincere desire for the overall project to succeed. In time I came to appreciate both his deep wisdom in those decisions and and his wonderful sense of humor. As Dave says, he was also a genuinely nice person. We can only hope to honor Satoshi’s work with future efforts at RHIC.

Best regards,

Bill

Dear collaborators,

It saddened me to learn of Satoshi Ozaki's death.  I think everyone
knows that RHIC exists in large part thanks to Satoshi's wisdom and
untiring work as head of the project to design and build it.  That would
be enough for most people, but in fact it's only a small part of what he
accomplished over his career.  In addition, he was a genuinely nice and
funny person and I always enjoyed talking with him.

Regards,
Dave

With great sadness, we learned Satoshi Ozaki passed away on Saturday,
July 22.   In his long and distinguished career, Satoshi made leading
contributions to nuclear and particle physics and major facilities,
including TRISTAN, RHIC, NSLS-II.  He will be dearly missed.
The family has arranged a service for those who wish to attend at the
Alexander Rothwell (formerly Alexander Tuthill) Funeral Home, 6447 Rt.
25A, in Wading River on Monday July 24th , between  1 to 2pm.  Following
the service, there will be a private cremation.
