Just to be clear - I said the forces should not be higher without iron.
Ramesh of course is the expert and has since made some estimates.

Hello John,

Mike Anerella had a brief discussion on this issue. Mike thinks with no
steel, there is minimal forces on the coils. But he fringe field in the area
could be the problem.
We were thinking that one can calculate the forces as well as the fringe
fields to see the severity. Of course, then related issue would be the need
for a high current power supply as well as quench protection.
