Ramesh,
There is really too much information--this is the Technical Design Report:
http://www.slac.stanford.edu/pubs/slacreports/slac-r-457.html
and there are many pictures here:
http://www-project.slac.stanford.edu/slacpix/BaBar/
and in that same place under cad_draw are many dwg drawings of the coil and flux return.

Thanks.
Do you have the details of the iron in the original design?

Hello Mike,
Thanks I stand corrected. That is why we added the idea that we need a
simulation (Ramesh's).

Yousef,
Just to be clear - I said the forces should not be higher without iron.
Ramesh of course is the expert and has since made some estimates.

Mike

Hello John,
Mike Anerella had a brief discussion on this issue. Mike thinks with
no steel, there is minimal forces on the coils. But he fringe field in
the area could be the problem.
We were thinking that one can calculate the forces as well as the
fringe fields to see the severity. Of course, then related issue would be
the need for a high current power supply as well as quench protection.

Yousef

John,
so, very soon, you will have the coil in your lab. That's very good.
Coming to the test, we did a partial test at Ansaldo without the iron
yoke.
The current was limited at 1/3 of the nominal current just for
avoiding problems with magnetic forces. However some not negligible
fring field was present (you need a large area around the coil free
of magnetic materials and limited access)..
Next year I will have to go to Fermilab. If you inform me about your
plans I can try to couple visit to Fermilab with a visit to BNL
Best regards
Pasquale
