COVID-19 Hospitalization Level Increased to High on 1/5: Face Coverings Required On Site Starting Monday, 1/8
Yesterday, Friday, Jan. 5, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-designated Hospital Admission Level of COVID-19 in Suffolk County was changed from "Medium" to "High." This was done in response to the weekly new hospital admissions of confirmed COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people exceeding 20.0. As of last night, that number was 24.8.
As a result of the change back to "High" – and in line with Brookhaven's workplace safety and re-entry plan (https://www.bnl.gov/covid19/docs/workplace-safety-and-reentry-plan.pdf, VPN may be required) and DOE requirements – the Lab is re-instituting controls in the following areas, effective Monday, Jan. 8:
- Face coverings will be required on the Brookhaven Lab site within Lab buildings, regardless of a person's vaccination status. Face coverings work and are effective at reducing disease transmission, and this is our primary goal here—to keep people safe.
- Face coverings must be worn in all government vehicles when occupied by more than one person.
- Face coverings may be removed by individuals only when alone in office spaces with floor-to-ceiling walls and fully closed doors. They may also be removed when outdoors, and intermittently indoors when eating/drinking.
Last year, the CDC replaced COVID-19 "Community Levels" with COVID-19 "Hospital Admission Levels," which measure the impact of COVID-19 illness on health and healthcare systems and inform the appropriate prevention strategies to utilize at a given time.
CDC provides county-level data showing the COVID-19 Hospital Admission Levels for each county in the United States. We assess Hospital Admission Levels in Suffolk County at least weekly to determine proper mask-wearing requirements.
The Lab remains in "Normal Operations With Telework" status, and staff are expected to comply with their existing schedules and the terms of their telework agreement, if they have one. Your Human Resources Manager can confirm if you have a current telework agreement in place.
In-person meetings may go on as scheduled, with no attendance limits at this time. However, in-person meeting attendees must wear a face covering in all public indoor settings.
COVID and influenza are currently very active in our community. Please stay home if you have a fever or are experiencing any COVID 19-related symptoms, and take common-sense precautions to keep yourselves and your colleagues safe as COVID numbers rise.
If you are coming to the Lab site, please remember to bring a face covering. If you forget, your Environment, Safety & Health representative will have a limited supply on hand.
When entering the Lab site, remember to put on your face covering and lower your car window before approaching the guard booth. The officer may ask you to lower your face covering for a moment to confirm your identity.
Employees are encouraged to stay up to date on available COVID-19 boosters.
Supervisors should account for wearing face coverings as part of the work-planning process.
Learn more about the Lab's "Protocols for COVID-19 Exposures and Cases:" https://www.bnl.gov/covid19/exposure-protocol.php.
Our primary concern continues to be the health and safety of everyone on site. When the level drops back to "Medium" we will remove these controls. We will keep you informed about any additional changes to COVID-19 controls.
If you have any questions, please contact me at Ext. 5756.
