Hi Steve,
My recommendation for low-cost off-the-shelf test cable is to use two of 3M # 3750/16 (Mouser stock: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/3M-Electronic-Solutions-Division/3750-16-100?qs=sGAEpiMZZMvo3LfgFpQA%252bDC4PK3fYmXxYMejL%252bekg9o%3d ) and one of Belden # 5502FE (Mouser stock: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Belden-Wire-Cable/5502FE-008U1000?qs=sGAEpiMZZMs5%2f3jTaGtq4JmHLIbs6dVBTDx60e5r0YM%3d ).
I guess the test cable set should be same length as real cable in real FST, but there may be some other constraints too. So with 100' cable you can probably make at least 4 test cable sets. I don't know how many might really be wanted for tests though; Zhenyu should better say about that and the length.
For the connector for at the patchpanel, I'd pick some alternative D connector (preferably machined-pin type) that must be available at Mouser too.
Sincerely,
Gerard
p.s. The cables above are both UL approved and are NEC type CL2 and CMR, respectively. So you shouldn't have any issues with using them at STAR.

Hi Steve,
Can you remind me what is that mating connector on the board? Is it D37F? I'd suggest for test cables (at least) we can find some quality D connector from Conec at Digikey or Mouser easier and cheaper than Positronics one. Is the IST patchpanel schematic and BOM posted someplace on drupal? Maybe we should start an "FST drawings" page where everything can be posted in its most current version for useful reference, right now I have to dig through the email trails it is potentially error-prone.
As to the wire guage I think we determined that 22 AWG was needed for the power wires (for IST; could be smaller for FST) and we thought that 28 AWG was small enough for the other wires.
I'll look for some off-the-shelf easily available cables to use for the test setup, as promised.
Gerard

Hi Gerard,
I'd like to order the Positronic connectors for the test cables. How many test cables should we make?
The IST documents indicate they used 20 gauge pins in the Inner cable connector (PP end), but the wire used is 28 or 22 gauge. Do you remember why this was done?
