Thanks for the comments. I'm changing '5 years' to 'several years' and I passed Paul's comments along to management and HR (with my agreement).

Hi,
Following on Paul's comment, it does seem to me to be a bit much to ask for 5 years of software development experience for a post-doc level position. Some PhD programs are shorter than 5 years, and the first couple years of PhD are often dominated by class work... so to me this experience qualification implies asking for someone looking for their second postdoc term.

I don't have any ideas for how to fix that except to say that contract longevity rates highly and such an individual would likely (?) have other options. Not for this time maybe, but stretching the funding to 3 years could look more attractive to candidates, gives us a better look at them and gives us more time to find funding lines when we have a person we really want to keep. The funding likely doesn't provide that flexibility but a big lab should be able to make such things possible - I wonder how creative other labs are in that regard?

My only comment is that a 2 year contract for a relocation to BNL for the relatively senior person described (5 years s/w experience) could be tough but I'm sure there's little you can do about that. I wonder if adding a sentence on "excellent track record of retaining talent" could help make a direct association between the promised s/w career benefit and the future employer?
