Mike,
No, probably not, and that's my fault, because it's part of our world at RHIC that has become an unwritten assumption. For example, the parking lot I usually park in is a Controlled Area. But I recently asked for my dosimeter records since 1995, and the total integrated dose in those 19 years was 15 mrem, and every year except one the reported dose was 0.0.
I think we can work with HP to make sure the postings in the area of the magnet are reasonable, but of course we are relying on the refrigerator set up for the ERL, but if that is operating, we are probably not able to do any serious work on the coil. I think we also have to figure out where the other equipment is going to go now that Paul is submitting the req for shipping it; some of it (like the large power supplies) probably need to be outside the area we designated for teh coil, which is actually quite small.

Was it ever mentioned in the meetings that the magnet was being placed in a
radiation area? Is this where it will remain for the FY15 cold testing?
Thanks

Hi Kin,
Is a simple solution for all of us to take Rad Worker 1?
I had it for years when I worked on the AGS floor
but since we moved to RHIC, CAD User Training was all that
is required. It wouldn't be so difficult to take RW-1 again.
Thanks.

Hi,
This afternoon, I feel that my job has finally got started. I've been
talking with a few people including our ESSHQ Asso. Director Ed. Lessard
and Division Head R. Karol, the HP Group Leader Paul Bergh, and Al
Pendzick et. al.
I just walked with Paul Bergh to the area where the Babar magnet sits in
Bldg. 912. As of now, the area that the magnet
sits is in the Radiation Area and most area of that huge building
isRadiation Area. For that, you need theRad. Worker 1
and C-A Access Training. There is an area near the ERL is now
"Controlled Area with TLD requirement" (let me call it "CAWT").
This morning, when the magnet arrived, the HP actually deposted the area
from "Radiation Area" to "CAWT".
You also need to sign a RWP (work planning) before you go to do work in
the Radiation Area.
Somebody is talking about the possibility of making the area where the
Babar magnet is a "CAWT" area. But it's
probably complicated and difficult. Because you may step into the
Radiation Area without knowing ... and the ERL may be running
soon and there is a small chance that the "CAWT" may become "Radiation
Area". ( Even for a CAWT, you may still need the "C-AD User
Training" and GERT to get the TLD. )
I wonder how many of you don't have the Radiation Worker 1 training. We
can arrange C-A Access Training (the C-AD User training
for STAR/PHENIX physicists are not really that suitable) specially for
this task.
To just to take a look, I can escort you --- I've done before ... but
you can't work but just "observe".
Ed Lessard gave me a 5-10 minute lecture which has made me feel very
important. He's worried that there are 3 groups of people (C-AD,
Physics and Superconducting Magnet Div.) working in the Radiation area
(or any area). So, it's my job to (try to) make sure that
we don't have any "incident"/"accident" ...
So, we (... a lot of involvement D. Phillips here) may certainly need to
do some work planning with our Work Control Manager Peter Cirnigliaro.
And we also need to pass Y. Makdisi's Expt. Safety Review Comittee ...
In this aspect, I'm like the so-called Liaison Physicist (if not a
safety officer) ...
The bottom line is that there will be rules / regulations in C-AD that
you need to observe and deal with before you can come to work in Bldg. 912.
They may not be difficult but we can't ignore them :-)
If there is anything unclear, please come to talk to me and I'll try to
sort this out.
Kin
