Thanks for all this, let me just mention one thing: the formula should in fact be
(q_i * q_j * R^2_{i,j})^(alpha/2)
so that for diagonal sources it is
(q_i^2 * R^2_{i,i})^(alpha/2) = q_i^alpha * R^alpha_{i,i}
and for a spherically symmetric source, it is
|q*R|^alpha,
but for the poster you only need the first formula above.
