Gunther and Dave,

The document reads well, and presents the descoping exercise in a clear and
thoughtful way. As other’s have also emphasized, I worry that the treatment
of the particle flow algorithms (lines 89-93 and 166-168) errs on the side of
being too optimistic, leaving the impression that the current instrumented,
stainless steel iHCAL may have been over-designed, which is surely not our
intent.

For lines 89-93 I’d support Jamie’s suggested wording, or the following,

Further studies indicate that the impacts of the iHCAL modifications on the
sPHENIX physics program may be mitigated through an optimal combination of
calorimeter and track based information, following .e.g., the particle flow
algorithm used in CMS and ILC jet reconstruction.
